Mainly 3 different type of intra ocular lenses are available:
a.) Mono Focal Lens- Such kind of lens enables a cataract patient to see clearly at distance. However, the person still has to wear glasses for near vision.
b.) Toric Lens- This kind of a lens is used for patients suffering from high astigmatism (high cylindrical power)
c.) Multifocal & EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus) Lens-These type of lenses improves the far, near or intermediate vision of an individual along with the cataract.
This type of surgery is most demanded.
Cataract surgery can be divided into 3 methods
- Manual small incision cataract surgery: in this method surgery is done by hand. Disadvantage are large incision (5.5 mm -6.5 mm), slow recovery, more discomfort, requirement of injection before surgery. Its advantages is low cost.
- Micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS): This is best method, as surgery is done with the help of machine. Cataract is broken into small pieces & removed by Phaco-emulsification method through small incision. Advantage are small incision (2.2 mm), no injection, fast recovery with minimum discomfort.
With Micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS) surgery most People are able to have an improved vision after 1 to 3 days of surgery. But the most accurate clear vision is attained after 3-4 weeks of surgery.
No, cataract surgery is not painful at all. Mild sedative and eye drops are used to calm the nerves and eye respectively.
Also, some eye drops are prescribed by the doctor after the surgery to keep infection and inflammation away.
No, there is no other way to get rid of cataract, other than a surgery. The cloudy/blurry vision caused by cataract can only be corrected by a surgery involving a new lens implantation.
A cataract surgery, if performed by an experienced eye specialist in a technologically enriched hospital is totally safe.
The patient is discharged on the same day of the surgery and he/she has to wear an eye patch/goggles for some initial days.
